Lions are often referred to as the “king of the jungle” because they are known for being such good hunters! Lions are carnivores, which means they are animals who eat meat instead of eating plants or eating both plants and meat.
Among lions, it is mostly the female lions (called “lionesses”) who are in charge of hunting for food. Lions and lionesses will hunt and eat pretty much any other animal in their habitat that they can find, but mostly hunt for medium-large animals like antelopes, wildebeests, and zebras. Lions will sometimes eat animals as small as mice or as big as hippos.
A lion who has made a kill will often eat a lot all at once – as much as 75 pounds! – and then rest for several days without hunting again.

A baby lion is called a “cub.” Cubs are usually ready to start hunting when they’re only about a year old!
