What do cranes do? |

Crane Game
Have you ever seen a crane game at an arcade? These games let you move a claw through the air, forward and backward, left and right, inside the machine. The goal is that when the claw drops and closes, it picks up a stuffed animal or some candy below it. How does this work like a construction crane? Items get lifted and then they swing into a useful position. In the case of a crane game, that useful position is above an opening where you can reach your prize!
Crane games are usually much harder than they look, so if you do play and don't win, don't feel bad. They're difficult for everyone!
Cranes are like the giraffes of the machine world. They are pieces of construction equipment that are very tall, and like a giraffe's neck, they are able to reach very high places. They can lift heavy materials high off the ground and then swing them into position.
Often, they lift heavy bricks and steel beams so that construction workers can use them to make the walls and floors of tall buildings. It's much easier than having people carry these heavy objects by hand!
Cranes, the machines, share their name with a type of bird, also known for its very long neck!
