What are icicles?

An icicle is the cone-shaped block of ice that forms when dripping water freezes! How do these special icy wonders come to be??

If you live in or have ever visited a cold, snowy place then you are probably already familiar with seeing them – when icy snow on a tree branch or a windowsill starts to melt and drip, it will sometimes freeze again because of the temperature or the other cold ice it encounters while dripping. As each cold drip wiggles its way down towards the ground and freezes in the process, icicles are formed!

Icicles can be very pretty to look at, but they can also be sharp and pointy on their ends and dangerous if they fall. Remember to never stand directly below icicles or any structures that icicles are hanging from. Follow the safety instructions of grown-ups and have a wonderful winter!

Cold and cozy!

If you've never seen an icicle in person, then have a grown-up help you find some pictures on the Internet or in a book. Once you've gotten a good idea, draw some pictures of your very own icicles!

Cut out your icicle drawings and hang them up around the house. Then, sit somewhere warm and cozy and admire the cold winter's day you've created!
