Do you enjoy playing or watching tennis matches? If so, then you might be interested in learning a bit about the history of the U.S. Open!
The U.S. Open is an annual tennis championship that is today held in Queens, New York.
The series of games that are now watched by hundreds of thousands of people started as a much smaller tennis contest in the year 1881. While the original competition (then called the U.S. National Singles Championship) was made up of only games for men, the U.S. Open today includes games in which both men and women compete.
Because it is considered such an important competition, the U.S. Open is part of what is known as the tennis “Grand Slam.” This term refers to what are thought of as the four most important tennis competitions, which include the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon in addition to the U.S. Open. – Any player who is able to win all four of these competitions in one year is said to have won “the grand slam”!
This year’s U.S. Open runs from August 31st until September 13th. Tennis players from different countries around the world will compete for the winning titles and the prize money that goes with it!
