Have you ever learned about the Royal Family (“monarchy”) of Britain? Although they don’t control the government, the British Royal Family serves as a symbol in their country. The monarchy of Britain is one of the oldest in the whole world. Having this long, steady, traceable history can be seen as a symbol of power and nobility.
The current Queen is Elizabeth II, who has been on the throne for about 55-60 years. On April 29th, 2011, people all over the world will celebrate the wedding of her grandson, Prince William!
Prince William will marry Catherine Middleton (whom he met at college) in a service at Westminster Abbey attended by almost 2,000 people. Because Prince William is not only a member of the Royal Family but also the second heir to the throne, many people are looking forward to watching the wedding on TV and celebrating it in their own homes!
In addition to the big ceremony at Westminster Abbey, the wedding will also be celebrated with a lunch hosted by the Queen and a dinner hosted by Prince Charles, the groom’s father.
Once they are married, the newlywed couple will take on one or more of several new royal titles! As the wife of Prince William of Wales, Catherine will automatically become Her Royal Highness, Princess William of Wales. It’s also possible that the Queen will give the couple a title of Duke and Duchess, but many people think Prince William will prefer to continue to be known as he already is, Prince William of Wales.
