A presidential family!
On January 20th, 2009, Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States at the Inauguration Ceremonies. Because he is the president, he and his family moved into the White House that day and they now live there as what we call the “First Family”!
President Obama's family consists of himself and his wife Michelle, as well as their two daughters – Malia, age 10, and Sasha, age 7.
Being the First Family
In many ways, being a member of the First Family is not any different from being a member of any other family. Malia and Sasha, for example, are still expected by their parents to do chores such as making their beds every day. They go to school and, of course, have to do their homework! Like many kids, they also earn an allowance. You might think that because their dad is the president they earn a big allowance, but it's reported to be just $1 a week!
Of course, there are certain ways in which it is different to be a member of the First Family. Living in the White House is one good example! The children of many presidents have grown up in the White House, and because it is such a large and historic place, it is different in many ways from lots of other homes. For example, the White House has a room with its own movie screen, and another room where there are private bowling lanes! There are also lots of historic rooms where important meetings are held and special security to help make sure that the president and his family are safe and happy!
Right now, lots of people are talking about the new puppy President Obama and his wife have promised to their daughters. No one is sure what kind of dog they will get, though it sounds like they're considering Labradoodles and Portuguese Water Dogs. Since Malia and Sasha will be expected to walk the dog on their own, the family has decided to wait until the spring when the weather will be nicer for getting used to the new chore!
