Do you like watching or playing tennis? If so, maybe you’ve been following the games at Wimbledon!
The Wimbledon Championship is held in London every summer (June-July) and is part of the tennis “Grand Slam,” a term that refers to what are thought of as the four most important tennis competitions, which includes Wimbledon in addition to the Australian Open, the French Open, and the U.S. Open.
This year’s Wimbledon games have earned even more attention than usual – the longest match in the history of tennis was played over the course of three days for more than 11 hours of playing time!
The two competitors were Nicolas Mahut of France and John Isner of the United States. Their match consisted of a record-breaking total of 183 games, most of which occurred in the fifth set, which was finally won 70-68 by Isner on Thursday morning!
Their 11 hours and 5 minutes of playing time (8 hours and 11 minutes of which took place in the fifth set alone) nearly doubled the previous record for the longest match, which had taken 6 hours and 33 minutes. The two exhausted players embraced when their amazing match was finally over, and received a long standing ovation from everyone watching!
