Talking points: Fire Safety |
by New York City Fire Museum >> more about the author
- Follow all of the safety tips you hear at school.
- Don't turn in false alarms - they could cost another person their life.
- Never start smoking - save your own life first!
- Have a plan with your family on where to meet in the event of a fire. There should always be two ways to get out - either a fire escape or a door.
- Don't hide.
- Don't play with matches or lighters.
- Don't play near or with the stove.
- Make sure you have smoke detectors and CO2 detectors.
- Don't play with any electrical appliances.
- Before you go into a new building, know how to get out (identify the red EXIT signs).
- Electricity and water don't mix.
If you’re in a fire:
- Always close the door behind you.
- Get close to the ground - crawl, the air quality is better closest to the ground. In a heavy smoke condition, put one hand on the wall until you find the door. You will always find a door!
- Use your head!! Get out of the building the best way you can - OR - If you can't, make your presence known - go to a window and start screaming to the firefighters so they know you're there.
