A new president is elected!

In the United States of America, Presidential Elections are held every four years on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November. On that day, citizens ages 18 and older get to vote for who they would like to have as their president for the next four years!

The most recent presidential election was held on November 4th, 2008 and the winner of the election was Barack Obama. Obama's win was very historic because he will be the first Black man to serve as President of the United States!


Inauguration Day

“Inauguration” refers to the official ceremony that will begin a new president's term in office. Inauguration Day is always held on January 20th, or on the 21st if the 20th is a Sunday.

Inauguration includes any number of events such as speeches, readings, performances, and celebrations! The new president and vice-president also take oaths to promise that they will uphold the constitution, protect their country, and serve faithfully!

The events of Inauguration are held in the nation's capital, Washington, DC. Because Obama's inauguration was so historic, a record-breaking number of people attended – over two million! The ceremony is also broadcast on TV so that people everywhere can watch!
