It happened in America that a large bank went bust and this happened as follows:
Banks used to lend money to other banks or people, who i.e. would like to build a house. Most of the times, the lending banks get the money back, but sometimes people or other banks cannot pay the money back. So it is possible that banks may go bankrupt.
