Have you ever thought about
all of the fascinating things that make our planet so special? Get ready to
love Planet Earth even more with these amazing facts about everything from the
dirt beneath our feet to the clouds up in the sky!
Land
- Rainforests are very special places. Even though they only take up a very small amount of the Earth’s surface, they’re home to more than half of the world’s plant and animal species!
- Dirt isn’t just brown. It can also be black, red, blue, and even yellow.
- You would need over 80 football fields stacked lengthwise to reach higher than Mt. Everest!
Oceans/Water
- The same water that's on Earth now was already here millions of years ago!
- More than three-quarters of the world’s fresh water is frozen ice.
- The deepest point in the ocean is the Pacific's Mariana Trench, which reaches so far down that from the bottom of the trench, you could stack almost 25 Empire State Buildings on top of each other before you reached the surface of the water again!
Plants
- Most trees have root systems that stretch out 2-4 times further than their branches.
- The largest seed on Earth belongs to the double coconut. It can grow to twelve inches long, almost three feet around, and as heavy as 40 pounds!
- Grass and other plants are probably pretty happy being green! They get their distinct color from a special helper called chlorophyll, which is what allows them to make food from just water, air, nutrients in the soil, and sunlight.
Weather
- Raindrops sometimes form when millions of tinier droplets in a cloud bump together!
- We have seasons because the amount of direct sunlight we get changes throughout the year. This is because the Earth doesn’t actually stand up straight… it’s tilted!
- A rainbow is like a big ribbon on top of the Earth, wrapping it up like a present: If you were to see a rainbow from up in the sky, like a bird, you'd be able to see that a whole rainbow is actually a full circle.
Planet
- The Earth is so big around its circumference (its fattest middle part) that if you were to lay down shoelaces from end-to-end, you would need over 157 million laces that were each 10 inches long in order to get back where you began!
- Earth is home to about 6.8 billion people. (That’s a six and an eight, followed by eight zeros!) These amazing 6.8 billion people speak about 6,000 languages and occupy nearly 200 countries!
- The Earth is pretty big, but the sun is even bigger: Over one million Earths could fit in the sun!
Conservation
- The reason petroleum isn’t the best choice for energy is that it’s made from the fossils of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. If we use them all up, the wait for new ones would be really long!
- The average American creates about 4.5 pounds of garbage every day.
- Up to 17 trees are saved when one ton of recycled paper is made!
