Sometimes kids feel like they have to choose between their mom and dad. Parents may say unkind things about each other. They may seem to want you to take sides. This can be very confusing for kids.

You do not have to choose. Both of your parents are still your parents, and you do not have to choose one over the other.

Birthdays and other holidays can be especially hard when parents divorce. You may feel pressure from one or both parents to spend these special times with them. It can get so confusing that you may feel like shouting, “STOP! I can't please everyone!”

If you feel pulled in different directions or caught in the middle, tell a parent or other trusted adult how that makes you feel.

What is your favorite holiday? Are there family traditions that make that holiday special to you?

If you were planning a birthday party for yourself, who are five family members you would want to invite?

Have you ever felt like your parents wanted you to take sides? If this happens again, what could you say to help them understand how this makes your feel?
