How do you handle childhood's most well-known fictional characters? Do you indulge in the magic of childhood and let your kids believe? Or do you avoid the difficulty of revealing the truth later by explaining the real deal from the start?

I think it's important to let childhood be magical! My daughter believes in Santa and the toothfairy, just like I did. why should they be the only kids at school who dont get to enjoy the fun?

We debated it alot, but decided we'd let our son believe in Santa. We try not to let it get too out of hand. santa brings a couple presents but most of them are signed from mom and dad. (we think it's important to teach that nice things don't appear from nowhere... mom and dad have to work hard and earn money to buy them)! But kids should believe the world is magical for as long as they can so santa makes an appearance too.

I think it's a great idea to let them "believe" but not let it get out of hand. I worry that if I set their gift expectations too high now, I might not be able to continue that in the future. Santa magic can be about a lot more than presents- the cookies for Santa and the carrots for the reindeer are a great example.
