What is an egg yolk?

With the yellow yolk and the white surrounding it, eggs are pretty recognizable! – What exactly is that yellow yolk? And what is the white stuff, too??

As you probably already know, the reason why chickens (and other birds) lay eggs is that the egg is where their baby comes from! Different kinds of creatures have their babies in different ways, and when it comes to birds, it’s eggs all the way.

Most of the eggs we eat come from chickens, but because they aren’t fertilized, these eggs don’t contain baby birds. Nevertheless, the unfertilized eggs we eat still contain everything else the fertilized egg would have!

That’s where the yolk and the white come in: For eggs containing baby chickens, the yolk of an egg serves as a source of food, while the clear-white part of the egg (often called the “egg-white” or the “albumen”) provides water and helps protect the baby chick and the very important yolk. –The reason the eggs we eat still have this same yolk and egg-white is that chickens lay the same eggs whether or not they’re fertilized.

Eggselent!

Because the yolk of an egg is meant to be a nurturing food source for a baby chicken, it’s packed full of good-for-you proteins and vitamins! The egg-white can also be a healthy choice with less fat and cholesterol but still with calcium, protein, and more!

What are some of your favorite egg dishes??
