A White-House Family Vegetable Garden! |
Very Veggie!
As you probably already know, eating fresh fruits and vegetables isn’t just delicious, it’s good for you, too! Fruits and vegetables are full of the nutrients and vitamins that people need to be healthy. Yum!
While most people would agree that fruits and vegetables are all good for you, the best ones are often the freshest ones. Lots of fruits and vegetables in the stores are grown in places far away, meaning they have to be picked before they are ripe so they can ripen while they travel. But when a fruit or vegetable is picked before it’s ripe, it often doesn’t have as many nutrients as when it’s picked at the peak of its freshness! The closer your veggies and fruits are grown to your home, the more likely they are to be as good for you as possible! – And what kind of produce patch could possibly be closer to home than your own back yard!??...
Planting some roots
Lots of people plant vegetable gardens in the spring so they can have fresh produce at their fingertips all summer and fall! In 2009, two to three times more Americans are planting gardens because homegrown food is not just a great way to be healthy, but is also a great way to save money!
Recently, First Lady Michelle Obama announced that her family would be among the many Vegetable Patch Planters this year! Having a vegetable garden at the White House will not only be a great way for the First Family to have fresh fruits and vegetables, but it will also hopefully set a good example for lots of other Americans, who might be inspired to eat more healthy, local food too!
The White House will get some help with their veggie garden from local students who will assist with the planting and gardening. According to Mrs. Obama, everyone in the First Family will be expected to help out with the gardening… even the President himself! The planting of the garden began on March 20th, with lots of hard work from the local students, the First Lady, and others who all helped to dig up the grass on the White House’s South Lawn and get the earth ready for planting!
The new garden will be a great opportunity not just for the Obamas, but also for the students who get to help out. Working on the White House Garden means they’ll not only get a chance to spend time with the First Lady and her family, but they’ll also be able to learn more about growing vegetables and eating healthy, and to teach what they’ve already learned! – Most of the kids working on the White House Veggie Garden already have some gardening experience because their school has its own on-sight vegetable garden which some of them help to manage already!
Fun with farming!
If you think a vegetable garden sounds like a good idea, ask your family if you can plant one this year, too! Even if you don’t have a backyard or lots of space, there are certain plants and herbs that can grow easily in just a pot on the windowsill! If your yard-work skills get really good, you might even become a better gardener than the President!!
